He has a real love for the countryside and the farm animals . You learn a lot about every day life on a farm and the terrific effort he and his family put into improving the farm for his parents when an accident meant she was unable to continue her work as a shepherdess in the same way, ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2021 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Penny Foster -- Durham Gem : Having followed Matt Baker on Country File and recently his own production, Our Farm in the Dales, this book was a must read and I was hooked from page one. Having spent my formative years in County Durham, this has been a nostalgic visit. I admit to a certain amount of envy for the warm close ties Matt has with his family as mine are too far spread. My forebears were farmers and Matt's story evoked such memories. His descriptions are vivid and easy to picture, and his animals are so well sketched I felt I knew them myself. Explanations in separate chapters on, for example, sheep dogs, hedge-laying and dry-stone walling were informative and so interesting. And with all Matt's achievements and sheer 'get-up-and-go' North Country Grit, yet remaining modest, only make him even more of a hero not only to his family, but to the reader of his first book and autobiography. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Annik Lamotte -- A delightful book : I really enjoyed this book, mainly because the people in it are so delightful. It was very interesting to learn about Matt's earlier life, his success as a boy gymnast and the ways he deals with his dyslexia. I loved the films he has done based at his parents' farm and hope there will be more. I enjoy spending time in his company and with his lovely family. It is comforting to feel that there are still some genuinely nice people in the world, when we are surrounded by sleaze, cynicism and disease. Thank you, Matt. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from serama -- Enjoyable book and content but ……. : I enjoyed Matt’s book and the subject he covered, learning about the farm and his background. However, the book jumps around all over the place, which makes it less easy to read. Words in capital letters mid sentence, does nothing for the reader. The book doesn’t flow as nicely as it could, and an editor should have helped sort this out. I also felt to keep mentioning his dyslexia, was a bit over the top. Lots of people have dyslexia/dyspraxia and cope, and write books. Therefore, perhaps a better editor could have assisted into making a good book into an excellent book.
